Bobcats defend their home mat at Butch

A quartet of local wrestlers reach Melton’s podium at IHS

A trio of Ignacio High School wrestlers took home top honors at the Butch Melton Invitational on Saturday in Ignacio:

Josh Gallegos (220 pounds), Christian Knoll (182 pounds) and Stocker Robbins (106 pounds) all went 3-0 at their home tournament to finish first at IHS.

Bloomfield won the tournament, while Piedra Vista finished runner-up.

Knoll was named the MVP of the higher weights, while Gallegos won his title in overtime.

Ethan Appenzeller lost in the 126-pound championship bout to finish second in his weight class with a 1-2 record on the afternoon.

Timmy Plehinger went 1-2 at 145 pounds.

Blaine Mickey took third at 170 pounds by going 3-1.

Miguel Perez hurt his elbow in his first match at 152 pounds and had to back out of the rest of the tournament.

IHS rookie head coach Cody Haga expects him to be ready for the San Juan Basin League Tournament on Thursday.

The team’s long-term focus, however, is on regionals.

“You never want to look over each tournament, and you want to take each competition as it comes,” Haga said. “In the end, though, you’re working for regionals to qualify for the state tournament.”

Colter McMenimen of Bayfield High School won the 138-pound division and was named MVP of the lower weights.

BHS next will wrestle at 5 p.m. Thursday at Alamosa.
