Bridge repairs will take place Tuesday near DoubleTree intersection

Colorado Department of Transportation will perform additional repair work on the U.S. Highway 160 bridge near the DoubleTree Hotel intersection from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Repair work on a steel joint connection CDOT has been monitoring began Friday.

CDOT spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes said the bridge is stable but the joint repair is needed for a smooth transition from the road to the bridge.

CDOT has been using asphalt as a temporary repair because rapid-set concrete is on back order.

Drivers will encounter both westbound and eastbound lane shifts. CDOT advises travelers to give themselves extra time to get to their destination.

“Please slow down and be patient as you go through that work zone,” Schwantes said. “Our workers are very vulnerable when they’re out on the roadway like that.”

Schwantes said CDOT should be able to complete the repair by the end of the afternoon.

The bridge crosses the Animas River and feeds into one of the busiest intersections on the Western Slope with about 30,000 traffic movements on average per day.
