Cafe au Play more than you may think

The Herald article “Child care pens in the Smiley Building” (April 10) was a wonderful introduction of the Durango Cafe au Play, yet has also led to two misconceptions that we would like to address.

We are a non-profit offering a 24-7 play space to local parents of young children. Our main mission is to build community and support.

Parents of young children connect during the day, and in the evenings, older youth/young adults can participate in sober fun (see our alternate Facebook page, “Sober Sanity”).

We are also a co-working space that offers child care during the day for up to three hours, for parents who work remotely or want to catch up on email.

We are an exempt child care, like the one at the rec center, so parents have to be somewhere in the Smiley building while we watch their child(ren).

Some parents who read the article thought that we only serve children of people who work for a business in Smiley, but actually, they can be college students who come here to study, or any other parent wanting to work while we play with their child.

Finally, parents can even trade child care in our space, so they can run errands without children, for example. That removes their child care cost and allows them to help each other.
