Call to readers re: freeze on federal funding

A memo from the White House budget office on Monday placed a freeze on all federal government grant and loan disbursements, and other financial assistance, effective Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. Eastern. Though Medicare and Social Security payments are not affected, it is unclear how long the freeze on other taxpayer-funded payments will last.

Across Southwest Colorado, many governments, for- and nonprofit businesses that make our communities tick – pay salaries, fund rents and mortgages, put food on the table – are affected. It is likely that governments at all levels, rural schools and hospitals, Medicaid, local law enforcement, infrastructure projects, small businesses and families, among others, will be affected, too.
