Central calendar already exists

There has been an oversight with the recent editorial written (Herald, Jan. 2) about a calendar needed in our community. Not sure what kind of research or preparation went into “Our view” but it shows a bit of a disconnect with Herald and our community … in my view.

The WhatsHappeningDurango.com community event calendar has become an essential resource over the years in Durango and surrounding areas. The calendar, created by local folks, not only helps promote events but also fosters a sense of connection within the community by reaching a broad audience of nearly 5,000 subscribers who receive a weekly events email. By providing a platform for both small and large events, the calendar supports local businesses, artists, non-profits, civic and community groups who all utilize the event calendar.

The mention of DowntownDurango.org partnership with WhatsHappeningDurango.com is not entirely correct. DowntownDurango.org (Durango Business Improvement District/BID) has the WHD calendar embedded on their website as well as many other businesses in town. The Wells Group and Durango Local News to name a few more. The calendar does not “mostly cater to tourists” as we help promote events like the Yarn MeetUp at the Library, Board games at Lola’s, and Cowboy Tuesdays at the Strater. These are a few examples that are posted.

The “one central community location” where anyone can post events solution is here and has been. Maybe the Durango Herald should consider getting the local calendar on their website and promote instead of wonder.
