Changes have diminished the Herald

As a subscriber to The Durango Herald for over 30 years, I have written hundreds of letters to the editor – in my head. Rarely have I felt so compelled as now, but I feel Durango has lost a rich heritage, tradition and resource and I must say something.

Call me silly , but the Durango Herald has been a primary source of news for me for those 30-plus years, not just local, but state, national and even international news.

With Richard Ballantine’s retirement as publisher and much turnover in top leadership, change was to be expected. However, that change has diminished the Durango Herald from a truly significant purveyor of all the news, to a predominantly local paper, along with the likes of hundreds of other underserved communities.

The Jan. 2 paper placed a story announcing a rebroadcast of a PBS historical program front page top left. That is where one would hope to find the most important news. When the Paris terrorist attack occurred , it was found buried many pages in. Admittedly, local sports coverage is much improved, but meaningful coverage, both locally written and wire service, seems much diminished.

At the least please return to a format of a front page with the most significant and timely news. Your readers, and the heritage of the Durango Herald, deserve better.
