City’s spending priorities are out of whack

The city has spent more than $15,000 on reusable bags! Four out of five of our City Council members directed city staff members to start pursuing the purchase of reusable bags to promote the Bag It! ordinance in February and actually started purchasing them before they even passed the ordinance! The city spent more than $10,000 on organic reusable bags at a cost of more than $2.50 each – directly related to promoting this ordinance! Including other bags, the city purchased in 2013, it has spent more than $15,000 this year!

How many bags do you already have? We counted 15-20 unused ones at our house. There is this kind of frivolous spending, yet there is no money for the Buzz Bus, parking meter fees are rising, water and sewer fees are increasing, etc. This City Council needs to be addressing the true needs of its residents, not spending money on their feel-good personal agendas. Thank you to Keith Brant for continuing to work for all residents of Durango! Note that The Durango Herald has known about this for weeks but doesn’t think that its readers would consider it important! Vote “no” on the Durango bag tax.
