Where did July go?
It went too fast for this columnist as we soon will roll into August with several fun events on the calendar.
Before I give you the results of the Dave Person Junior Club Championship on Monday and Tuesday, another junior event, which partners with adults, will be played at Hillcrest Golf Club on Sunday – the Hillcrest Adult/Junior Tournament, presented by Coldwell Banker Heritage House Realtors. There is $250 in added prize purse and an entry fee of $15 per person. It’s a flighted event, with tee times beginning at 1 p.m., and scoring will be net only.
I thought it was a nice gesture from Dalton Ranch Golf club professionals Pier Nielson and Pete Wolke to concede their scores to let all the ladies win the Beat the Pros event July 23. Besides, it gave the gentlemen a chance to get out of the pro shop and have some fun during the busier time of the season.
And, speaking of Dalton Ranch, the annual 3 Queens and a King-Ladies Day Tournament will be held Aug. 6. This two-person best ball, with handicap, event brings together three Dalton Ranch Women’s Golf Association members, with one significant other/spouse on each team for a royal round of golfing competition.
Dalton Ranch also will have its monthly Couples Tournament on Sunday. The field is limited to the first 48 players signed up and will have a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
A big reminder about The Bugler tournament, which is a Dalton Ranch Men’s Club Member/Guest annual event Aug. 7-9. This is one of the original tournaments on the DRGC schedule since the course came into existence.
Since I have a little time to slip a few more mentions in, the 19th annual Dudley Engle Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 16 at Hillcrest. This is a fun event to help raise funds for the local chapter of the Emblem Club, who, in turn, helps several local charitable groups in town. This year also will be a special fundraiser for Flight for Life. The entry fee is $30 per person, and the sign-up sheet has just been placed in the hallway of the Hillcrest clubhouse.
And, although this is a September event, I wanted to mention the annual Durango and Farmington Lions Club Charity Golf Tournament, which will be played this year Sept. 5 at Dalton Ranch. It’s a four-person scramble, with proceeds going to several local area charities. As we get closer to the event, I will let you in on a challenge brought on by the Fort Lewis College men’s and women’s golf teams on all the par threes during the event.
The 2014 Dave Person Hillcrest Junior Club Champion is Cory Gillespie, who shot a two-day, 36-hole total of 157 on Monday and Tuesday at Hillcrest.
