I suspect there were many golfers in my age bracket watching the PGA Senior Championship last weekend.
Remember the approach shot to the green that caromed off the grandstand and eased its way toward the hole? I bet you fellow seniors exclaimed, “Been there, done that!” Not!
It’s like the great fishing story that never was, but it was nice to dream about. We all have seen the horror stories or been involved with the same in the game of golf. However, that was the best placed spectator-retaining wall shot I have seen in a while.
When the dust settled, it was the inevitable, as Colin Montgomerie, one of the gritty European Tour mainstays, came away with his first official major on United States soil. The more interesting sidebar to this event was how perturbed Montgomerie was for the deliberate slow pace of playing partner Bernard Langer.
I kept hearing the Frank Sinatra song – “I’ve got you under my skin” – playing over and over in my head. To coin an old brokerage house phrase, Montgomerie earned it.

I wanted to drop a few notes on the upcoming Coca-Cola of Durango Navajo Trail Open, which will be held at Hillcrest on June 12-15:
First, there are a few amateur spots open for the event, so stop into the pro shop and get registered.
Secondly, this major local event could not be possible if it were not for the volunteers who help the tournament committee.
If you would like to volunteer, please give John Vickers and his staff a call at 247-1499. You will be right in the thick of the action, and have fun.
Those of you who have signed up for either of the two tournaments at the Glacier Club – the Links to Learning event Sunday and the Music in the Mountains Golf and Barbecue on Tuesday – have a great time in these charity events. I hope to have results for you next week.
