I have one quick thought before I delve into upcoming events and tournament results: It was sure nice to see Phil Mickelson and 19-year old Jordan Spieth win tournaments on either side of the pond last weekend.

Both golfers had to go into sudden death to accomplish their fetes – Mickelson at the Scottish Open, his first European victory, and Spieth, the youngest golfer in 82 years to win a Tour event at the John Deere Classic. Spieth, however, can thank a dramatic bunker shot on the final hole of regulation which gave the 19-year old a 19-under score at the end of regulation. Do you think 19 now is his lucky number?

And while we are on the subject of tournaments, the 18th annual Charity Golf Classic, to benefit the United Way of Southwest Colorado and the Durango High Noon Rotary, will be held Friday at the Dalton Ranch Golf Club. The field already is full, however, individuals still have the option of paying not to play for $50 to help support both organizations, which in turn support many local nonprofits and projects in our community.

If you would like to contribute, contact Lynn Urban, president and chief executive officer of United Way of Southwest Colorado.

The Tarpley RV of Durango Women’s Chili Pepper Challenge was held over the weekend, and I will have complete results for you in next week’s column.

C.J.’s Diner/Durango Joe’s Coffee-Hillcrest Men’s Senior Open will be held Saturday at Hillcrest Golf Club. There is $500 in added prize purse and an entry fee of $50 per person. The minimum age to enter is 50 years old. This is an 18-hole individual stroke play format with flights designated by age.
