We hope to give Jolean and the Scott Family a small gift this holiday - a memorable Christmas Eve which includes her neighbors and community caroling for her and her family.
My name is Amy Davlin. Today, I'm contacting you as a mom and neighbor, not as the PTSA President. And, for once, I'm not asking for money or volunteer time to support the schools! Perhaps, miracles do happen.
Jolean Scott, our 9-year-old friend and neighbor in Bayfield, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma in August 2018. DIPG is an aggressive, inoperable brain tumor. The onset is sudden; symptoms often appear a few weeks prior to diagnosis. At present, there is no effective treatment and there is no cure.
The median survival time after a DIPG diagnosis is nine months.
Jolean has always been a bright light in our Mesa Meadows neighborhood and beyond. Even if you don't have young children who play together on our block, you may recall her beautiful, freckled smile and her love for all animals. You may recall her effortlessly cruising around Louisiana on her skateboard, hoverboard, rollerblades, or some other new-fangled wheeled thing, as recently as July.
Friends of the Scott family are organizing events to make this Christmas Eve a memorable one for Jolean and her family.
Before Christmas EveIf your child wishes to make a personalized holiday card for the Scott Family, I will collect them in a basket and deliver to Jolean after the caroling. If you have a battery-operated candle (available at Lewis Mercantile here in Bayfield) please bring one along for each family member/friend.
On Dec. 24, Christmas Eve6:15 p.m. - All may convene outside here at our home at 624 Louisiana Drive. We'll get organized, collect cards, and coordinate with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
6:30 p.m. - Together we'll walk over to the Scotts' home and sing three carols which are a few of Jolean's favorites, "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," and "Jingle Bells."
My son expressed interest in ending with a children's-only rendition of "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells." He knows far better than me what's sure to make Jolean smile, so we hope to end on that positive note.
