Cover churches’ good work – not cults

I read the Herald’s Religion section on Jan. 30 and was again disappointed in what you chose to cover: a cult in Utah using religion as a pretense for criminal activity and debauchery.

I am part of the Christian community in this area and am aware of so many good things going on at our local churches. It seems a shame not to let the rest of the community know what’s going on. I have recently visited five different churches in Durango and have been so impressed with each one. Each has a powerful Christian message and is doing a great job ministering to the needs of those in the church, our city and the world.

Each week, the people in these churches offer money and time to be used to benefit others. These are hard-working people who give a portion of their paycheck in order to help others in the name of Jesus. Some churches fill backpacks full of healthy snacks for children in our schools every Friday so that kids can have good nutrition through the weekend. One church gave away thousands of dollars worth of coats and boots to needy families in the area. Several churches contributed to projects donating gifts to needy families in the area and the families of prisoners. I know a young female engineer who personally supports over 30 children through Compassion International.

Here is a chance to get some sunshine in your newspaper! The churches in our area will be happy to supply you with the details, and the rest of us will enjoy reading some good news.
