Dick White presented another insightful article on the tragedies the COVID-19 pandemic has generated. I note that he states “at least 4 ways.” I’m guessing Dick is aware of another tragedy enhanced by the pandemic. That tragedy is the global distraction from the crisis of our changing climate.
Interestingly, the more we know about this threat/tragedy the less motivated people are to act to mitigate it. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change just released the third segment of its latest scientific report on the planet’s changing climate. Among other things, the report deals with ways governments and the public can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as increased use of renewable energy. Between the horrendous Russian invasion of Ukraine, COVID-19, the economy and other newsworthy stories, many people have forgotten this imminent crisis. Despite other events, the climate crisis hasn’t lessened or gone away.
If you are concerned, there are actions you can take. One is to contact our members of Congress to express your concerns, remind them of the importance of this crisis, and urge them to take action. Here’s a link to Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s page to facilitate that action – https://citizensclimatelobby.org/write-your-representative. You can also attend the Earth Day Event at Rotary Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 23 to learn more about actions to take.
You can have an answer when your grandchildren ask what you did to protect our beloved planet.
