The Durango girls golf team wrapped up its final tournament before regionals and state championships. The Demons placed third in the PV Panther Invitational at the San Juan Country Club in Farmington on Monday with a team score of 374. Kirkland Central High School was first out of six teams with a team score of 331 and Piedra Vista High School finished second with a score of 355.

Demons junior Ellie White finished tied fourth with an 82. White shot 44 on the front nine and 38 on the back. Junior Raimee Brant finished 13th with a 93 with a 52 on the front and a 41 on the back. Sophomore Jayden Craig finished 15th with a 97 and sophomore Riley Harms finished 16th with a 102.

Freshman Dylan Livingston did not compete for the Demons as she is injured.

Durango girls golf head coach Kirk Rawles said it took the girls a little bit to warm up their swings and get used to the speed of the greens with their chips and putts. This led to better scores on the back.

“We left some in the tank,” Rawles said about his team’s performance. “With Jayden (Craig) shooting 97 and Raimee (Brant) shooting a 93, they can play a little bit better than that. Dylan (Livingston) would have been a factor in that. Kirkland really has a well-balanced team. Kirkland are really solid and so is Piedra Vista. If we get all of them and start firing on all cylinders, we might be able to get closer to those guys.”

Eight grader Hayden Dan from Kirkland Central won the tournament with a round of 78. Kirkland Central sophomore Makayla Manus finished second with an 80 and Kirkland Central senior Kylie Manus shot an 81 for third place.

Rawles said the course was in really good shape and the greens were rolling pretty fast.

Next up for the Demons is regionals on May 14 at Foothills Golf Course. Rawles said Foothills is an old-school course that will be exposed so wind could be a big factor.
