A day after getting just one hit against the Fruita Monument Wildcats in an 11-0 loss, the Durango High School baseball team picked up its play Saturday in the rematch at DHS. Trailing 11-4 in the top of the sixth, the Demons scored four runs, then loaded the bases to bring the go-ahead run up to bat. Fruita, however, got the next out to strand three runners and held on to win 12-8.

Jordan Stanley smacked a two-run home run for the Demons, his fourth of the season. Brady Hansen drove three runs, and Matt Pane had one RBI.

Stanley and Ian Szura both scored a pair of runs while Tagert Bardin, Michael Benner, JJ Hoerl and Liam Southerland came around the bases to score once.

DHS plated two in the top of the first to take an early lead, but Fruita responded with five in the bottom of the frame. The Demons cut the lead to two with another run in the third, but Fruita again responded, scoring another four in the bottom of the third.

Bardin pitched the first three innings for DHS, striking out two and walking four while allowing nine earned runs. Hoerl pitched the last three innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits.

The Demons also committed two errors, compared with three for Fruita, and were outhit 13-12.

Durango is now 3-14 overall and 1-3 in the 5A/4A Southwestern League. Fruita leads the league at 12-6, 4-0.

The Demons will next host the league’s No. 2 team, Montrose, at 3 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
