Demons’ goal rush

Durango boys lacrosse opens with a 13-goal victory in New Mexico

The Durango High School boys lacrosse team started the season with an onslaught of goals.

The Durango Demons (1-0) began the spring season with a road trip to New Mexico with a pair of games against Santa Fe Prep and Sandia Prep. The trip got off to a quality start as the Demons downed Santa Fe Prep 16-3 on Friday.

“It was a great way to start the year. We brought 35 guys down here with a mix of varsity and junior varsity. Everyone got to play and picked up valuable experience,” DHS head coach John Robinette said.

DHS attacker Liam Millar, a junior, scored two goals and recorded three assists for the Demons. Junior midfielder Jared Cook scored three goals and had one assist, and senior Jacob Boyle scored a hat trick.

Hunter Hall and Duncan Whitley each had two goals in the win.

“It was a strong performance all around. Our defense allowed only one goal in the first half, and our (starting) goalie, Walker Brown, didn’t allow a goal and made three saves,” Robinette said.

Robinette was happy his team could open the year with a few games in New Mexico before facing tougher league competition.

“It is nice to start the season against some other teams that aren’t tops in the conference like we have every single year,” he said. “It helps to knock the cobwebs and the rust off of guys and let them get experience on the field. They can build some chemistry that way.”

The Demons will continue the road trip at 10 a.m. Saturday against Sandia Prep.
