The Durango High School girls soccer team did everything right in its season opener, head coach Dalon Parker said.
Well, except for winning. But the Demons didn’t lose, either.
DHS (0-0-1) opened its season with a 0-0 tie at Fruita Monument (0-0-1).
“For the first game of the season, we looked really good,” Parker said. “Fruita is a pretty solid team for us to go against for the first game.
Durango fired 12 to 14 shots on the Fruita Monument goal, Parker said.
“We had a ton of shots on goal that we just couldn’t finish, but you expect that in the first part of the season, and especially the first game,” he said.
DHS goalkeeper Leah Stephens made 12 saves for the Demons.
“She played absolutely amazing, keeping us in the game,” Parker said.
Parker was most pleased with the teamwork his squad showed.
“We showed continuity and togetherness. It is great to see that in the girls program,” said Parker, who also doubles as the DHS boys soccer head coach. “We showed big fight and competed until the end. As a coaching staff, we are happy with where we are.”
DHS is back in action at 5 p.m. next Friday at Grand Junction Central, another Southwestern League opponent.
“Do we need to get better? Yes. Will we get better? Yes. But we are very happy with this first road test after a bus trip and playing well,” Parker said.
