Demons, of course, win the Lady Demon Invitational

Durango swims six state cuts in victory at Glenwood Springs

The Durango High School girls swim team dropped six state-qualifying times and rolled to victory at the six-team Lady Demon Invitational on Saturday in Glenwood Springs.

Durango racked up 397 points, easily enough to clear the runner-up total of 277 accrued by Glenwood Springs.

DHS won five events to go with a bevy of second- and third-place finishes. The 200-yard medley relay of Haley Warren, Elli Earl, Annie Mummery and Brooke Kniffin claimed victory and a state-qualifying time in 2 minutes, 2.50 seconds.

Kniffin and Mummery continued their tear in individual events later in the meet. Kniffin swam a state-qualifying time in winning the 50 freestyle in 25.54 seconds, while Mummery did the same in a victory in the 100 free in 56.97 seconds. The duo also went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, both claiming state times. Kniffin won in 1:02.86, while Mummery finished in 1:04.50.

The 400 free relay of Kniffin, Earl, Halee Pritchard and Mummery swam a state cut in a runner-up finish, as well.

“We have two relays right now, and then Brooke and Annie in their individual events, but we’re hoping the 200 free relay, which is very close with a state time – so, yeah, we hope to get them qualified, as well,” DHS head coach Kathryn Ross said.

Not to be outdone, the Durango divers made a splash Saturday. Sarah Lawton, Elise Tidwell and Caroline Tidwell finished first, second and third, respectively, to rack up a pile of points for the Demons.

“I’m just very happy that we have a lot of girls that are really competitive,” Ross said.

DHS next will swim Jan. 24 at home against a set of teams to be determined.
