Going down 6-0 early didn’t phase the Durango High School baseball team Saturday; the Demons know they can score runs in bunches, and they had plenty of time to make up for the early deficit.

DHS (11-8, 5-5 Southwestern League) did just that, scoring seven runs on six hits in the top of the sixth inning to rally to an 8-7 road victory past the Fort Collins Lambkins (5-13, 3-8 5A Front Range League) in the final game of the regular season for DHS.

“It was a good game for us to hang around and come from behind to win; it’s a good lesson to learn at this stage of the season,” DHS head coach Rob Coddington said.

Tyler Worley was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and one run scored for the Demons on Saturday. He came up with a momentum-changing hit in the sixth inning when he hit a comebacker to the mound that knocked the Lambkins’ pitcher out of the game.

“Worley knocked their pitcher out of the game, literally,” Coddington said. “The kid was throwing good, and Fort Collins had to re-enter their starting pitcher, and we got some runs on him.”

Riley Jaye was 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored in the game.

Dayne Rowley started the game for the Demons on the mound. Ben Wiley pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, and Casey Dunlap pitched the final four innings. Dunlap had seven strikeouts while walking two and giving up only one run.

“Wiley and Dunlap did a really nice job for us. They both kept us in the game the whole time,” Coddington said.

The Demons are hoping to get a home game in the state tournament next weekend, but Coddington said the team will wait on pins and needles to find out where they stand when brackets are released Wednesday.

“We were seventh in the wild-card standings going into (Saturday), and I’m not sure if we will score any points for this win because Fort Collins only has five wins this year, but they are 5A,” Coddington said. “We are hoping to be in the top eight to get one of those home games. We have a chance, but, if we do get a home game, it’ll be as one of the lower seeds.”
