DHS can’t dig out of first-inning hole

The first inning doomed the Demons in two of three games to open the season.

After giving up nine runs in the first inning Saturday, the Durango High School baseball team couldn’t come back in a 14-8 loss to Fort Morgan in the Lloyd McMillan Memorial Baseball Tournament at Montrose High School.

“We had trouble again the first inning. It was kind of a combination of a couple of errors, a couple of base on balls and then Fort Morgan had some timely hits that contributed,” DHS head coach Eric Baker said. “We closed the gap a bit, but we were not able to come back on them from down 9-0.”

The Demons (1-2) had similar trouble in the season opener Friday against Delta in a 17-5 loss before a big 8-6 win against Fort Collins in the second game of a doubleheader.

On Saturday, the Demons committed five errors in the field. Junior Lawrence Mayberry started the game on the mound. Baker said he pitched well outside of some walks and errors behind him in the first. Jordan McKnight pitched three scoreless innings in relief, and Dayne Rowley closed the game out with one scoreless inning.

Hayden Sill was 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run for DHS. Casey Dunlap and Zac Gasaway both went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Mayberry was 2-for-3.

The Demons will play at a tournament at Ricketts Park in Farmington Thursday through Saturday, beginning with a matchup against Class 6A Las Cruces of New Mexico in the first round at 2 p.m. Thursday.
