DHS football wins battle of unbeatens

Durango scores again on D and goes 4-0 at Farmington

A lot of defense and a bit of opportunistic offense helped Durango High School move to 4-0 on Thursday night.

The DHS football team got a defensive touchdown for the second consecutive week and allowed no points on defense in a 21-2 victory over Farmington in a battle of unbeatens.

In a game that saw plenty of punts, Durango broke through first when quarterback Jeremy Szura scored on a 25-yard touchdown run after a bobbled handoff attempt, putting DHS up 7-0 late in the first half.

Tyler Worley got in on the action on the Demons’ second drive of the third quarter. The senior running back scored from 37 yards out to put the Demons in front 14-0.

Szura’s next touchdown came from the other side of the ball. He intercepted a Jacob Lucas pass and returned it 60 yards for his second defensive touchdown in as many weeks and a 21-0 lead for Durango.

Farmington (3-1) got its only points when Kyle Reynolds sacked Szura in the end zone in the fourth quarter after Blake Dunlap’s interception gave DHS the ball at its own 3-yard line.

DHS will try to improve to 5-0 on Sept. 28 when the Demons travel to take on Palisade. DHS will play its Southwestern League opener against Grand Junction on Oct. 4 at home.
