DHS tennis sweeps Basalt

Demons fall to Steamboat in close one

The Durango High School boys’ tennis team blanked Basalt, 7-0, on Thursday, but lost a close battle to Steamboat Springs, 4-3.

Against Basalt, Griffin Hall won at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Calan Barnhardt scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

At No. 3 singles, Rowan Hall won 6-0, 6-3 for the Demons.

Patrick McBrayer and Carter Ward won their match 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2, Leo Stritikus and Hays Stritikus beat their opponents, 6-1, 6-3.

Will Benac and Nate Claassen won their match at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-2.

Hunter Gray and Michael Shires completed the sweep by winning their No. 4 doubles contest, 6-1 ,6-3.

The Demons, however, came up just short against Steamboat Springs.

Rowan Hall scored his second victory of the day, 6-4, 7-5.

McBrayer and Ward won a close contest at No. 1 doubles, 2-6, 6(7)-6(5) and 11-6.

Tanner Coddington and Jeb Holt, meanwhile, played at No. 4 doubles versus Steamboat and picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

The other matches were all close, but Steamboat emerged victorious in them to take the duel.

Durango will next compete in the Western Slope tournament Friday and Saturday.
