Durango baseball takes a bite out of Palisade Bulldogs

DHS gets third consecutive big win

The hot streak of the Durango High School baseball team continued Wednesday.

The Demons extended their winning streak to three games against Class 4A opponents receiving votes in the Colorado High School Activities Association poll. After picking up a key Southwestern League sweep on the road against previously 10th-ranked Montrose, DHS returned home for a game against the Palisade Bulldogs.

Durango didn’t only win, it did it in style with a 15-2 thumping of the Bulldogs. DHS improved to 8-4 overall with the win. Palisade, which is 7-0 in its Western Slope League, fell to 10-4 with the loss. DHS joined elite private school and second-ranked Valor Christian of Highlands Ranch as the only other Class 4A team with a win against Palisade this season.

DHS got it done at the plate with 17 hits Wednesday. The Demons also played clean defense with no errors in the field.

Ryan Genualdi had a big day at the plate, as he went 3-for-3 with two triples. He had two runs batted in and scored two runs. He has been an extra-base hitting machine for DHS.

Kegan D’Aleo was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Fynn Hyson also had a huge day, as he went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Gage Mestas of Durango High School just gets under the tag of a Palisade High School player on second base but was called out on Wednesday at DHS.

DHS freshman Gage Mestas was 2-for-2 with one RBI. Senior Gavin Mestas was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Gus Kidd was 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored.

D’Aleo pitched four innings for DHS to earn the win. He allowed four hits and didn’t walk a batter to go with two strikeouts. Tre’Von Martinez pitched one inning. He allowed three hits and two earned runs. He walked one and struck out one.

Palisade senior Masson Barber pitched 3 1/3 innings. He allowed 13 hits and was charged with seven of the nine runs that crossed the plate while he was on the mound. He walked one and struck out one. Sebastian Campbell pitched the final two outs of the fourth inning. He allowed four hits and two of the six runs allowed were earned. He walked three and struck out one.

The Bulldogs had two extra-base hits in the game, as Jack Mohler had an RBI triple, and Luke Sorenson had a double. Stevenson Reynolds was 1-for-3 with one RBI.

DHS (2-2 SWL) will try to extend its winning streak at 4 p.m. Friday at home against 5A/4A SWL foe Grand Junction Central (5-10, 1-3 SWL).
