Durango boys golf ‘flat’ in Pagosa Springs

Demons’ golf sees strong effort from younger players

Kirk Rawles called it a “flat day” for his varsity golfers at Pagosa Springs Golf Club.

Senior Eric Walker had the lowest score of the day for the Demons with an 80; Cameron Barnhardt and Cory Gillespie each shot 83, and Cy Spicer finished with an 88. Lucas Robbins played in the fifth varsity spot and shot an 85 for another solid round.

“Nobody got it going. Eric had a solid round, Cory started out rough, had a great middle section and then a tough ending,” Rawles said. “I think Cy just had one of those miserable golf days we all get all the way around. Cameron had a few blowup holes that cost him.”

Still, the Demons finished second as a team with a score of 246. Alamosa won the meet with a 241. Haydon Wehe of Alamosa was the medalist after shooting 77.

The Demons’ younger junior varsity golfers stole the day for DHS. Blake Martin shot an 81, and Rawles called it one of his best rounds to date.

Kyle Pritchard followed with an 83, Robby Grogan shot 91, Kobe Szura signed for a 93, and Luke Napier finished with a 107.

Three other Demons got their first taste of a high school tournament. Ryan Genauldi shot 91, Caleb Newman finished at 98, and Kyle Kirkpatrick finished with a 106.

“I think on some levels the course was playing tougher than normal. It was pretty wet over there,” Rawles said. “It was to the point where you hit the ball and the ground gave way underneath. It was too mushy, and the ball wasn’t rolling out.”

Durango will play twice next week in Montrose at Black Canyon and Bridges before hosting a one-day invitational the week after.
