Durango’s Fred Edwards wins first tennis match of season

Rest of Durango tennis team falls at first meet

After knocking off some early rust, Fred Edwards was back to his usual winning ways.

The Durango High School boys tennis No. 1 singles player picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win against Steamboat Springs’ Teague Burger.

It was the lone win for the Demons in a 6-1 team defeat to Steamboat Springs in Grand Junction.

“Fred thought he had to work his rust out a bit. The games were long and close,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said. “It was nice for Fred to get some distance in the score. The long bus ride left him with some cobwebs, but he should be ready to go this weekend now for the Western Slope Open.”

Alijah Konikowski ran into a tough opponent at No. 2 singles in a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Charlie Smith.

Jake Beekman made his No. 3 singles debut and fell 6-3, 6-1 to Chase Adams.

“It was really fun to see his first competitive singles match for us,” Weisfeldt said.

Will Downs and Micah Hwang once again teamed up, this year at No. 1 doubles. They fell 6-0, 6-2 to Joe Bargerdeing and Matthew White.

The closest match of the day was at No. 3 doubles, where Durango’s Ian Osey and Tommy Rodgers fell to Nolan Connell and River Fox-Welch 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 4 doubles, Durango’s Luke Meyer and Eno Ulshafer lost 6-0, 6-0 to Jeff Bender and Peter Wharton.

The Demons will compete the next two days at the Western Slope Open in Grand Junction.
