The Durango Coffee Co. will have a lot more room for customers and entertainment, after moving the retail side of the business two doors down.
“We really want to focus on community. ... What better way of promoting that than to bring in some local artists,” manager Austin Gorton said.
The coffee shop plans to host local musicians a few nights a week and move in some bookcases and additional seating into the open space as well. Those changes are expected in the next few weeks, he said.
Last week, the staff started moving the kitchen wares of the business into the space formerly occupied by Mesteno Gallery, and it opened on Sunday, Gorton said.
Claude Steelman’s work was on display in Mesteno, but when the gallery closed, he moved into the storefront occupied by Brown’s Sport Shoe in the 800 block of Main Avenue.
Scott Biaggi and Matt Pobloske purchased Durango Coffee Co. in early 2016, and they wanted to update the business, Gorton said.
“Nothing really changed there for about 20 years,” Gorton said.
The business also plans to expand its breakfast menu and have more sandwiches and pastries.
The business is open until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays, and Gorton does not expect the hours to change for events.
