Durango Devils doom La Cueva with unrelenting attack

Hockey team continues its roll as season winds down
Wyatt Killinen and the Durango Devils club hockey team dominated the La Cueva Bears over the course of two games. The Devils won by a combined scored of 12-3 to close out their home schedule at Chapman Hill Ice Rink.

Charged up to play their final games on home ice this season, the Durango Devils varsity club hockey team put on an offensive showcase.

The Devils, members of the Durango Area Youth Hockey Association and competing in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League, averaged more than 17 shots on goal per period in two games against the La Cueva Bears of Albuquerque. The result was a pair of wins, 6-1 and 6-2.

With forwards pushing the puck and controlling the game, the Devils were able to dominate play. It took only 90 seconds into Saturday’s first game at Chapman Hill Ice Rink for Gus Kidd to put Durango on the board thanks to an assist from Eno Ulshafer.

On the other end of the ice, Durango’s defense made La Cueva star forwards Jason Knoll and Seth Payson largely non-factors, and the Bears finished with only 11 total shots in the game. Knoll scored the team’s lone goal in the final 4 minutes of the third period.

Durango’s other goals in the first game came from Everett Howland, Clay Kinder, Timothy Miller and Landen Sill, who had two goals. Ulshafter finished with three assists, and Kidd added two assists of his own. Sill also had an assist, as did Joe Lawton.

Game 2 on Sunday was much of the same, as Kidd scored a pair of unassisted goals to open the game. He finished with three goals, while Ulshafter and Miller each scored with assists on both goals by Howland. Miller assisted Kidd’s third goal for the hat trick, and Sam Kidd added the Devils’ sixth goal of the game.

The Bears put 29 shots on goal in Game 2 against Durango goalkeeper Robby Grogan, who made 27 saves.

While the home schedule is complete, the Devils still have work to do on the road. They’ll travel to El Paso, Texas, this weekend to face the Coronado T-Birds.
