Sheep belonging to the family of J. Paul Brown head down County Road 521 in 2017 as part of Bayfield Heritage Days. (Jerry McBride/Durango Herald file)

It’s time for Bayfield’s annual Heritage Days and Sheep Trailing event, which will start at 8 a.m. Saturday with a 5K Fun run.

Then it’s the sheep’s turn. The sheep will come down Buck Highway around 9:30 a.m. After the sheep, there will be a parade on Mill Street, and then plan to spend the rest of the day at Joe Stephenson Park for vendors and fun.

According to the event’s website, the annual Bayfield Heritage Days and Sheep Trailing event “commemorates this special time of year for area ranchers and honors the rural lifestyle our beautiful town of Bayfield was built upon. This is not a reenactment of an historic event. This is Southwest Colorado living history."

While you’re there, here’s some important parade etiquette to keep in mind:

  • No dogs are allowed at the Sheep Trailing Parade for the sake of the sheep and the safety of spectators. The guard dogs see any other dog as a threat, so it is for your dog’s safety not to be at the parade.
  • Stay on the curb at all times. If you step into the street, others along the route can’t see and if the sheep see a funnel ahead, it will spook them.Don’t jump into the middle of the sheep – even for that perfect photograph. It will frighten the sheep.
  • Don’t walk through the sheep. Stay on the curb.
  • Do communicate with a volunteer or a sheep rancher if you spot a problem.
  • Do bring children but keep them with you at all times. Do take pictures but only from the side of the parade route.
