Durango finishes fifth in tournament

The Durango High School girls volleyball team traveled to Parker on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Ponderosa High School volleyball tournament, and went an even 2-2 in games played while coming in fifth place overall among eight other teams.

The Demons lost to the Cherokee Trail Cougars to open the tournament Friday in consecutive sets with scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-9.

On Saturday, the Demons lost to the Pine Creek Eagles in four sets with scores of 25-17, 25-15, 25-27 and 25-15. Durango returned and beat the Douglas County Huskies in three sets with scores of 26-24, 25-21 and 25-17. The Demons rounded out the tournament by beating the Eagle Crest Raptors in five sets with scores of 25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 16-14.

The Chatfield Chargers beat Cherokee Trail in five sets to win the tournament with scores of 25-15, 25-23, 13-25, 21-25 and 15-10.

“It was nice to see some of the same competition that we’ll see at regionals,” said Durango head coach Colleen Vogt in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “Our blocking did really well. We had great serving, and all around solid play. We stepped up when we need to.”

Assuming Durango (12-8, 5-5 5A/4A Southwestern League) makes the regional tournament, the Demons will find out who they play when seeding is released on Monday.
