Durango girls lacrosse loses pair of games

Demons will end season against Telluride next weekend

The Durango High School girls lacrosse team was on the road over the weekend, losing to Fruita Monument on Friday and Grand Junction on Saturday with scores of 17-6 in each game.

Against Fruita Monument (2-5, 1-3 Mountain League), Durango saw goals from Alex Gillen, who scored three times, Shilo Gillen, who scored twice and Joey Rayburn, who scored once.

“We had some struggles on Friday,” Durango head coach Jeff Einfelt said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We went back to the hotel and worked on those issues. We played well, but we just didn’t play as a team.”

Durango (2-7, 0-7) had to replace Kylee Shilaikis when she went down with an injury at goalie in the last 10 minutes of Friday’s game. Rayburn and Gracie Weaver took over for her Saturday. Neither girls have ever played goalie before, but they made it through.

“They stopped quite a few goals,” Einfelt said. “We were strong defensively.”

Against Grand Junction (7-1, 4-1), Shilo Gillen and Jessica Lumen scored two goals each, Hannah Lumen scored a goal, and Lexi Crawford got her first goal of the season.

Up next for Durango is Telluride for a back-to-back meeting with the Miners, which will be at 4 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday at Durango High School.
