Durango girls soccer downs Montrose to continue streak

Girls soccer wins 4th in a row

Winning at Montrose is always a difficult task for Durango High School soccer teams. Blowing out the Indians is almost unheard of.

That’s what the Demons did Tuesday, as Durango used three goals from Taylor Klone to beat the Montrose High School girls soccer team 5-2. It was the Class 5A/4A Southwestern League opener for both teams.

“We didn’t play very well in the second half, but that first half was a monster,” Durango head coach Dalon Parker said. “Everybody knows going to Montrose to play, it’s hard enough to win a game. To win by that many goals is even harder.”

Durango (5-3, 1-0 SWL) scored 15 minutes into the match as Klone found her first. Then the floodgates opened. Chloe Taylor scored moments later with an assist from Jael Larson.

Klone added another goal before halftime with an assist from Mikayla Neidlinger, who also assisted an Emma Aggeler goal before halftime.

Klone added her third goal for a hat trick with 10 minutes to play in the second half.

Durango had a miscommunication from freshman goalkeeper Emily Badgley to the defensive back line that led to the first goal for Montrose (3-4, 0-1 SWL). The Indians’ second goal came after a corner kick.

“We cleared the corner, but from about 35 yards out, the girl hit it and it just went over the keeper’s head,” Parker said of Montrose’s second goal.

Badgley made three saves in the game and wasn’t under much pressure most of the match, Parker said.

Durango has won four games in a row and has a while to prepare for Fruita Monument in a home game at 11 a.m. April 8.

“We’re starting to finish,” Parker said of the team’s attack. “The shape was good, the communication was good, how we attacked in the final third was good, and the passes were all good in that first half. I’m very happy.”
