Why should Durango voters consider the 1A tax proposed for the city?
The city population has increased exponentially since the 1950s. Our city has not had the funds to properly maintain its infrastructure. This means that we citizens are forced to walk on miles of dangerous sidewalks and drive on streets and alleys that have not been properly repaired or rebuilt since the 1950s.
Delaying the needed repair and improvements will only increase the costs in the future. This will happen as the city faces decreases in sales tax revenue because of the decline in the oil and gas industry, lower enrollment at Fort Lewis College as well as increased internet sales. To delay this needed work will cost Durango taxpayers more in the long run.
Durango has prided itself as a city of trees, parks and a healthy environment. Personally, I believe it is time to also take pride in having sidewalks that are safe for walking and streets and alleys that are well maintained.
