Durango High boys, girls basketball fall at Montrose

DHS girls turn focus to Class 4A state tournament

The Durango High School girls basketball team dropped the regular-season finale against Montrose 46-32 on Friday night in Montrose, but the sting of the defeat wasn’t as bad for the Demons because of what lays ahead.

The CHSAA Class 4A state tournament bracket will be released Sunday, and DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick and the Demons are confident they’ll be part of the field.

“We’re in. We were the 32 seed (in RPI) this morning,” Fitzpatrick said, referencing the tournament’s 48-team bracket. “I’m extremely proud of the kids for making it, especially after our start to the season. That’s attributed to our senior and the kids continuing to work hard. We’re in. We were in position for a home game but we’ll have to see where the RPI puts us when everything is done Saturday.”

The Demons finished second in the 5A/4A Southwestern League behind 5A Fruita Monument. Montrose (11-11, 4-4 SWL) finished third in the league standings and held the 33rd spot in the RPI rankings on Friday.

In Friday’s loss, the Demons (10-12, 5-3 SWL) struggled to score against Montrose. Fitzpatrick said the team’s defense was solid throughout the game, but Montrose got to the 50-50 balls with more regularity.

Hilda Garcia led DHS with 14 points. Emma Hackett added six points, and Fitzpatrick said junior Alyssa Robertson provided strong minutes off the bench.
