Durango High School cross country champs get standing ovation

The Durango High School boys varsity cross country team was honored with a standing ovation at the Durango City Council meeting Monday night. Flanked by assistant coaches Laura Knapp, left, and Brett Wilson, right, they are, from left, David Moenning, Benjamin Lachelt, Harry Steinberg, William Chandler, Isaac Ducker, Jordan Helms and Seamus Millett. Nicholas Turco, who competed at state all four years of high school, arrived just after the presentation.

They may not have gotten a ticker-tape parade, but the Durango High School boys varsity cross country team that won the 4A state championship Saturday got a standing ovation at the Durango City Council meeting Monday evening.

The standing-room-only crowd included parents, team members and friends in a sea of red and black, the Demons’ colors.

The first state championship for the Demons in 16 years, it required a team effort to achieve. City Councilor Sweetie Marbury, who introduced them, said the team included parents and grandparents who “taught their children to run fast.”
