Durango High School grad Avery Llewellyn named preseason RMAC football special teams player of the year

Colorado Mines kicker Avery Llewellyn, a Durango High School grad, made 20 field goals last year and was named Second Team All-RMAC. That season earned him the RMAC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year award Thursday.

One more time, just for kicks.

Durango High School graduate and Colorado School of Mines kicker/punter Avery Llewellyn was selected as the 2015 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year on Thursday.

It is Llewellyn’s second consecutive preseason award, and he was named to the All-RMAC Second Team last year.

Llewellyn, a 2011 graduate for Durango High School, won the 2013 RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year award.

The upcoming senior led the Orediggers with 112 points, making 20-of-29 field goals last season. His longest field goal was 52 yards.

Llewellyn also punted for Mines, kicking 39 times for a 43.1-yard average.

Only 15 of those 39 punts were returned, and one bombed for 70 yards.

In addition to his RMAC recognition, Llewellyn also was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Watchlist for the second year in a row. The award honors the top kicker from the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA for performance both on the field and in the community.

Llewellyn’s teammate Justin Dvorak, a junior quarterback, was named the RMAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

He led Division II with 4,287 yards passing and 398.3 yards of total offense per game.

His 36 touchdown passes were second in the country.

CSU-Pueblo defensive end Morgan Fox picked up the RMAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honor.

He was a first-team All-RMAC performer last season with 12.5 sacks on a national title winning squad.

The rest of the RMAC Preseason All-Conference Team will be named Aug. 3 at the RMAC Kickoff in Colorado Springs.
