Biathlon is on the rise across the United States and it’s coming to the La Plata County Fairgrounds this summer. Durango Nordic Ski Club is hosting a summer laser biathlon clinic and race on Saturday in partnership with U.S. Biathlon.
The event invites participants to learn about the Olympic sport of biathlon, which combines endurance running with precision shooting using safe, kid-friendly laser rifles.
With support from John Farra, Director of Sport Development at U.S. Biathlon, and a truckload of laser rifles and range equipment, the event will offer an accessible introduction to the sport for all ages. Attendees will have the chance to hear from local Olympians Lanny and Tracy Barnes, who will also be sharing their experience and skills.
“Biathlon is growing around the USA, as witnessed by our increased membership and participation nationwide,” said Farra. “We’re thrilled to be coming to Durango, a community with a strong tradition of producing top endurance athletes and Olympians, to help bring the excitement of biathlon back.”
With more Nordic communities embracing laser biathlon programming, events like this one allow clubs to introduce biathlon in a safe and welcoming way with no live ammunition or prior experience required.
Event Schedule – Saturday
Location: La Plata County Fairgrounds
8 a.m.: Registration & Information
8:30 – 9:30 a.m.: Intro to Biathlon Clinic & Rifle Practice
10:00 – 11:30 a.m.: Age-Group Wave Start Races
11:45 a.m.: Awards Ceremony & Bring-Your-Own Picnic Lunch
Participants will complete a multi-lap running course with two bouts of laser shooting. Missed shots result in a short penalty lap, mimicking the Olympic format in a low-pressure, fun atmosphere.
Registration Fees:
Adults: $10 before 5 p.m. on Friday; $15 after
Youth (under 18): Free
