A new food pantry to serve Durango’s school students this summer will open June 11 and run through Aug. 17 at Durango High School.
Two “Stuff the Bus” events will be held Sunday at south City Market and Albertsons to provide initial stock for the pantry, which will be housed at the School Based Health Center at Durango High School.
Julie Popp, spokeswoman with the Durango School District 9-R, said food items the pantry would be particularly grateful to receive include: pasta, tomato sauce, canned soup, canned chicken, canned tuna, peanut butter, crackers, cereal, granola bars, shelf-stable milk, canned beans, canned veggies, canned fruit, oats, instant potatoes and animal crackers.
School buses will be in the parking lots, and donors are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to stuff the buses.
The pantry will be open 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
