Durango Swim Club’s elite excel at championship meets

Haley Benjamin qualifies for out of state competition

It’s championship season for the Durango Swim Club.

Haley Benjamin, 13, qualified for the regional meet in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18 minutes, 8.25 seconds, which placed her fourth overall at the Age Group State Swim meet in Thornton on March 8-10.

She took fourth in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:14.79, which qualified her for the Western Sectionals Meet in Federal Way, Wash.

Benjamin took ninth in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:17.82.

She also qualified for the Age Group Western Zones in August, also in Federal Way.

“State was big,” Benjamin said in a press release. “I got excited because there were faster girls, but that’s also the reason I got nervous. It felt good to be able to swim with them.”

Brooke Kniffin and Anne Mummery attended the Senior State Meet, which features swimmers ages 15-and-older, in Denver from February 28 through March 2.

Neither swimmer turned in times fast enough to qualify for further meets.

Kniffin is a senior and will no longer participate for the club, while Mummery still has two years of eligibility at Durango High School.

“We are sad to see Brooke leave,” DSC head coach Suzanne Schieltz said in a press release. “But we are excited to see Anne potentially step up to a leadership role at the club.”
