Durango volleyball splits SWL home slate

Montrose sweeps DHS, but Demons bounce back and sweep Central

The Durango High School volleyball team started its 4A/5A Southwestern League with a pair of home games on Friday and Saturday.

The Demons started their title defense against Montrose on Friday, but the Red Hawks were able to sweep the Demons 25-20, 25-20 and 25-17 to move into first place in the league with a 3-0 mark.

After the setback, DHS came back strong on Saturday and swept Grand Junction Central, 25-13, 25-17 and 25-19 to improve to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the SWL.

Aava Dreger and Sarah Somrak both had 10 kills in the win. The Demons also served nine aces, led by Eva Stewart with three. Stewart also had 23 assists in the win while Dreger and Somrak each had a pair of solo blocks. Libero Tyler Trujillo made 20 digs, while Somrak, Dreger, Brooklyn Messier and Hadyn Nieman all had 12 digs or more.

Against Montrose, Dreger had a team-high 11 kills while Somrak and Nieman had six each. Stewart had 27 assists. Somrak had three blocks and Trujillo made 17 digs. Every time DHS got close to Montrose, however, the Red Hawks were able to pull away late to take the set.

Durango will next play Piedra Vista (2-6) on Tuesday in Farmington.
