A Durango woman died after being involved in a single-car rollover south of downtown on Colorado Highway 3.
Skye Buswell, 33, was flown in critical condition to St. Anthony Hospital in Denver after Wednesday night’s accident. A spokeswoman said Thursday she died.
The rollover occurred about 10:05 p.m. in the 1000 block of Highway 3, near a bus yard for Durango School District 9-R, said Lt. Ray Shupe with the Durango Police Department.
Buswell was driving a maroon 1997 Ford Explorer southbound when she drifted off the right side of the road, overcorrected and then rolled the vehicle on the right side of the road, Shupe said.
Buswell was ejected. A witness said she was unresponsive at the scene. She was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with head trauma before being airlifted to Denver, said Capt. Dan Shry with the Durango Police Department.
Authorities initially were concerned a child may have been thrown from the vehicle because they found an empty car seat, Shupe said. Firefighters used an infrared imaging device, but they didn’t find any signs of a child.
Family members soon confirmed the child was safe with them and not involved.
“At this point, we really don’t know what the exact cause of it was,” Shupe said.
It does not appear Buswell used a seat belt, he said.
There were no signs of alcohol use or drug use at the scene, he said.
