The Durango High School cross-country team got a glimpse of some of the best runners in the state over the weekend.
The Demons took part in back-to-back races, first at the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede Friday in Colorado Springs, then at the Pete Felleta Cross Country Invitational Saturday in Pueblo.
The Durango girls finished fourth out of 18 teams in the championship division Friday, then won the girls race on Saturday.
After placing 15th overall on Friday, the DHS boys took second as a team on Saturday.
In Friday’s boys championship race, Durango’s Charlie Dillman clocked a 16:33 to finish 27th overall. Dillman then finished fifth in Saturday’s boys race in 16:44 to keep Coronado, which won Saturday’s boys title with 16 points, from getting a perfect score. Coronado had five of the top six finishers, led by champ Xzavier Campos (16:04). DHS scored 55 to take second, followed by University (104), Montrose (107) and Mesa Ridge (112).
Sofia Voss used her fresh legs to win the girls race in 19:37 on Saturday. Dewa Ilg finished second in 20:26, followed by Ayumi Lambert (fifth, 21:04), Mira Quayle (sixth, 21:05), and Aileen McManus (eighth, 22:23). DHS scored 22 points to win the girls team title in Pueblo, besting Fountain-Fort Carson (65), Montrose (73), Cornoado (79), University (101) and Pueblo County (161).
Ilg finished 18th in 19 minutes and 50 seconds to lead the DHS girls on Friday, followed by Lacy Ruggiero (20th, 19:53), Lambert (44th, 20:36), Brynn Aggeler (45th, 20:37) and Quayle (62nd, 21:01).
Valor Christian won the girls team title Friday with 96 team points, followed by Denver East (137), Fairview (140) and Durango (184). Rosie Mucharsky of Denver East won the individual title in 17:54 on Friday.
Mathew Edwards of The Classical Academy won the boys race in 15:27 on Friday. Rock Canyon won the team title Friday with 92 points, followed by the Classical Academy (105), Fairview (112), Grandview (119), Cheyenne Mountain (142), Valor Christian (161), Erie (216), Douglas County (261) and Heritage in 10th (263) while the Demons scored 357 finish ahead of Denver East, Golden View Classical and Battle Mountain.
