Durango’s big on charm

Durango was named the most charming town in Colorado by a travel writer for Only in Your State because of events such as this, where Jim Bryce and other Colorado Mounted Rangers trot past the Strater Hotel during the 21st annual Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering parade in 2009 in historic downtown Durango.

Being on top-10 lists is nothing new for Durango. Best true West town, best recreational town, best beer town, best mountain biking town – if there’s a category that applies to us, it’s likely we have a shot at being on the list.

But now a travel writer for the website Only in Your State has ranked us the most charming small town in Colorado.

Annie Sandmeier wrote, “With its nearby (Mesa Verde) National Park, historic downtown and Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, this Southwest town has it all (and then some)!”

Silverton came in second: “What the town lacks in population, it makes up for in epic skiing, incredible views and some of the nicest people in the state.”

The other towns in order are Aspen, Burlington, Crested Butte, Manitou Springs, Golden, Louisville, Glenwood Springs and Breckenridge.
