Durango’s Dairy Queen to close

New property owner will go different direction
After 39 years at its current Durango location at 2817 Main Ave., Dairy Queen is slated to close Sunday. A new property owner will open a different store at 28th and Main Avenue.

That’s it, Durango. The days of enjoying Blizzards, hot fudge sundaes and other addictive soft-serve ice cream treats are over. After 39 years at its current Main Avenue location, Dairy Queen is closing.

Owner Tim Sapa, who lives in Bayfield and has operated the Dairy Queen, 2817 Main Ave., for the past 11 years, said a new owner bought the property and will close down the popular ice cream eatery.

Sunday was the store’s last day of operation. Booths were packed with customers of all ages enjoying a last taste.

“It’s a very, very sad day,” Sapa said. “It’s not from lack of business. It’s just a sign of the change in times, I guess.”

Sapa said he’ll focus on his other business, The Pine Cone in Bayfield. It serves up burgers, fries and shakes. He said 25 or so employees, many of whom Dairy Queen is their first job, will be laid off as a result of the closure.

The new property owner’s intentions are unclear. Josh Skarsgard of Albuquerque could not be reached for comment Sunday.

However, Skarsgard, who owns Skarsgard Development, has been active in the Four Corners. Recently, he’s opened a Del Taco, and has a Chick-fil-A and Five Guys Burger under construction in Farmington.
