Program about trees to be held Saturday

The San Juan Mountains Association will present “Trees, Trees, Trees” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Participants will learn about the variety of trees in the region, how they survive the winter and what animals depend on them for their survival.

The program, which is limited to 20 people, is for families with children ages 4 and older. Snowshoes for children will be provided. Advance registration is requested. Call the San Juan Mountains Association at 759-9113 or email mk@sjma.org.

Feb. 28: Plant and Animal Adaptations at Mesa Verde.

March 7: Winter Plant Identification Hike at Mesa Verde.

Specialty-crop meeting to be offered in March

A speciality-crop symposium for current and aspiring growers is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 1 at the Lewis-Arriola Community Center, 1 mile west of U.S. Highway 491 in Arriola.

The hosts will be Fort Lewis College, the Colorado State College Extension and the New Mexico State Extension.

Speakers will discuss common pests of fruits and vegetables, herbicides, mushrooms for soil remediation, specialty-berry production and growing grain fodder.

Navajo Reservoir release to decrease

The Bureau of Reclamation will decrease the release from Navajo Reservoir from 350 cubic feet per second to 250 cfs Friday.

Releases are made to attempt to maintain a target base flow through the endangered fish habitat of the San Juan River. The release will be increased Wednesday.
