Earth Girls restaurant set to close

Main Avenue business for sale

Earth Girls Goodies and Eatery will close Wednesday after two years in business.

The restaurant on north Main Avenue specialized in organic, vegan and gluten-free dishes.

Owner Kirsten Gum said she decided to close two weeks ago after her organic supplier, FreshPack Produce, decided not to serve Durango anymore, she said.

But there were other factors that contributed to the decision, she said.

“One of things about being an entrepreneur is you have to know when to call it quits,” she said.

She wasn’t seeing the numbers that she had aimed for after two years and nothing seemed to be changing.

She also found it tough to predict the busy days, although she did develop some loyal customers over the years.

The business and the assets are for sale. Someone could choose to move the business or open a café in the same location after working with the landlord, she said.

On Monday, the restaurant will start selling bulk organic dry ingredients at wholesale cost in addition to its menu.

Gum moved to Durango to start the business and funded it herself.

Before launching Earth Girls, she was doing recipe development and she plans to continue that work.

She also plans to work as a private chef and said she also has other opportunities.

“I have aces up my sleeve for what my next business venture might be,” she said.
