DHS counseling service moves to new model
The Durango High School Counseling Department has changed to a grade-level school-counseling model.
This model will allow the department to form better partnerships with parents and students because students will have the same counselor each year through graduation.
Monticello youth corps completes trail projects
The Canyon Country Youth Corps, of Four Corners School of Outdoor Education in Monticello, just finished its summer crew season.
Four crews of predominately local and Navajo youths, ages 15 to 18, spent five weeks working on numerous projects aimed at improving access, recreational opportunities and riparian restoration on public lands in and around San Juan County.
This summer, for the Manti-La Sal National Forest, crews completed construction of a trail to the 12,482-foot summit of Mount “Tuk,” or Tukuhnikivatz, which means in Ute “the last place that sees the sun.”
Corps members also worked for Arches and Canyonlands national parks on the challenge of non-native plant removal.
The youth corps’ fall season began Aug. 17. Four crews, ages 18 to 25, will work in the backcountry along the Escalante and Dolores rivers to remove tamarisk and Russian olive from the banks of each river.
