Danielle Craig receives degree
Danielle Craig graduated May 9 from Lubbock Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication design.
She is the daughter of Clark and Sharon Craig of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the granddaughter of Carl and Teri Craig of Durango.
DHS announces scholarship winners
Durango High School hosted its Senior Awards Night on May 18, which recognized 42 seniors for receiving a combined total of more than $2 million in scholarships and awards.
Luke Folwer received the National Merit Scholarship. As a finalist, Fowler has been awarded $7,500 a year for four years at the institution of his choosing. He plans to attend St. Olaf College, a private liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota, this fall.
Vayle Townsend received $2,000 in scholarships from Basin Electric Power Cooperative and United Methodist Thrift Shop. He also is the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award. To be eligible for the award, young adults ages 16 to 25 must complete a minimum of 100 hours of service in a 12-month period. Recipients receive a personalized certificate, an official pin, a medallion or coin and a congratulatory letter from the president of the United States.
Shaylah Wood and Mallory Byrd are the recipients of the La Plata Electric Association’s scholarships. Both students were awarded $28,000 each to be distributed over four years. Wood plans to attend Colorado University Boulder and Byrd will be continuing her education at Dartmouth College.
Nolan Reed was awarded the President’s Gold Scholarship to Baylor University. Including music scholarships that he has received, Reed has been recognized with more than $172,000 to be distributed over four years.
James “Nash” McNichol was awarded $500 from Sachs Construction LLC. Commercial Floor Services contributed an additional $500 to the award.
Madison Dickson is the recipient of the $2,000 Joseph Philpott Fine Art Scholarship.
The Durango Education Foundation Award for Excellence was given to Emma Buchanan and ‘Ilima Umbhau. Both students were awarded $1,250 to use for their post-secondary studies.

Baylor University Law School in Waco, Texas, conferred a juris doctor degree on Timothy Daniel Roehrs of Pagosa Springs at spring commencement exercises May 2.
DHS DECA recognizes businesspeople
Durango High School DECA recognized two businesspeople as 2015 Friends of DECA.
This year, the award recipients are Julie Snider-Popp and Kyle Hartley.
Snider-Popp, Durango 9-R School District public information officer and marketing director, was recognized for her work in raising DECA awareness in the Durango community.
Mason Stetler and Jared Webster conducted a research project that analyzed the effects of visual merchandising on Duranglers Flies and Supplies, a local fly-fishing outfitter. Hartley, manager of Duranglers, assisted the two students, helping judge potential window displays for the store, helped implement the design into the window and consistently assisted the DECA club in marketing strategies. Stetler and Webster’s project placed second at the Colorado State DECA conference and was recognized at the international conference in Orlando, Florida.
DHS DECA also qualified six students to compete at the International DECA conference April 24 to 29 in Orlando, Florida: Charley McClung, Jared Webster, Jenna Engelken, Joaquin Valdez, Abby Scott and Stetler.

Andrea Plested graduates from Regis
Andrea Plested, daughter of Carolyn and Bill Plested of Bayfield, was a recent graduate of Regis University, Denver.
Plested received a Masters of Science – Family Nurse Practitioner degree with honors. In addition, she received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Practice: FNP. She is grateful to La Plata Integrated Health and Mercy Family Practice for their mentoring during her clinical rotations in La Plata County.
Nathan Spencer presents research
Nathan Spencer of Durango, a recent graduate of Fort Lewis College, presented senior research at the conference for the Rocky Mountain Section of the Geology Society of America.
Spencer’s presentation, titled “Testing Models on the Relationship of Clay Alteration and Mineralization: Bulldog Mountain Vein System, Creede, Colorado,” was co-authored by faculty mentor David Gonzales.
Spencer also received the Outstanding Undergraduate Oral Presentation award for his performance. His degree is in geology.
Boys conference receives award
The local eighth-grade transitional program, called “Keys to High School Success,” has received an award for the program and a grant funding boost to support the continued build-out of the program.
This year, the program was recognized with a Gold Medallion award from the Colorado School Public Relations Association. The conference, which brought together middle school boys from Bayfield, Mountain Middle School, the Liberty School, Miller and Escalante, was recognized for its ambition to positively change the personal behaviors of young male students to help them succeed.
Also, this year, in addition to being awarded a variety of local and regional grants, a $50,000 grant from Daniels’ Fund and Character.org has been awarded. The grant is a one-year grant that went into effect May 1.

Elks announce scholarship winners
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Durango Lodge No. 507 announces the recipients of 10 local lodge scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000.
Marissa Talamante from Pagosa Springs High School will receive a Colorado Elks Association Grant. The $1,000 grant, awarded by Durango Elks Lodge, is made possible by the Elks National Foundation through the Colorado Elks Association.
An additional $7,000 in scholarships were awarded to seniors from three area high schools:
