Knowledge Bowl team competes in D.C.
The Bayfield Knowledge Bowl Team of Ben Young, Tierzah Smith, Mitchell McCloskey, Henry Walters, Michael Fusco and coach Tara Henderson won the Southwest Colorado Regional Knowledge Bowl meet in March and placed second at the Colorado State Knowledge Bowl meet in April.
The team was invited to the National Academic Championship in Washington, D.C., from May 27 to June 1.
Bayfield’s record was 2-4, which was an improvement from last year’s performance.
Learn how to become a medical assistant
An information session about Southwest Colorado Community College’s Medical Assistant Program will be held at 11 a.m. June 25 at the West Campus, 33057 U.S. Highway 160, which is between Mancos and Cortez.
This informational session will explain how people can become a medical assistant in three semesters.

Doughty graduates with wildlife degree
Loren Doughty of Hesperus graduated from Eastern New Mexico University on May 16 with a degree in wildlife and fisheries science.

Haley Stencel named to dean’s list
Haley A. Stencel of Durango was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law.
To qualify for the honor, a student must earn a minimum 3.0 grade-point average out of a possible 4.0 while taking at least 10 credit hours of coursework.
Samford University is in Birmingham, Alabama.
Char Schank speaks at Head Start meeting
Char Schank was one of 18 professionals who spoke at the Early Childhood meeting June 3 in Towaoc.
State of Colorado employees and members of tribal Head Start programs discussed services for children that receive state funding.
Schank represented Southern Ute Community Action Programs’ Head Start/Early Head Start Division. She is a member of the National Indian Head Start Board of Directors and the director for SUCAP’s Head Start/Early Head Start in Ignacio.
Ansel Schiavone earns dean’s list
Ansel Schiavone of Durango was one of 372 students named to Denison University’s 2015 spring semester dean’s list.
Students who achieve dean’s list status have maintained a grade-point average of 3.7 or better (out of 4.0) for the semester. Schiavone is a member of the Denison class of 2017.

Conservation district awards scholarship
The La Plata Conservation District announces that its 2015-16 college scholarship has been awarded to Sarah Lawton.
Lawton is a graduate of Animas High School, where she distinguished herself academically and through participation in sports and community activities.
Lawton plans to attend Colorado College with a focus on environmental science. She is the daughter of Richard and Susan Lawton of Durango.
The La Plata Conservation District Scholarship is intended to recognize students attending college and pursuing disciplines relating to agriculture and/or natural resources. Any resident within the La Plata Conservation District’s area who is enrolling in college in Colorado or a neighboring state as a full-time student (at least 12 credit hours) with a declared major related to agriculture and/or natural resources is eligible to apply for the scholarship.
