Edwards: LPEA can lead on renewables with cities and states

The La Plata Electric Association Board of Directors has recently established a subcommittee to meet growing energy needs in the community, and research new energy trends, such as wind and solar.

This is a huge win for the people of Durango. By now we know traditional dirty energy sources threaten our health, natural resources and way of life here in Colorado.

As technologies for harvesting and storing renewable energy improve, they become less expensive and more efficient, and will potentially drive down the cost of energy.

Researching renewable options for the city of Durango is the first step in ensuring that we protect our climate, and meet growing energy needs, including achieving the goal of 100 percent locally-derived renewable energy by 2050 put forth in a petition by residents.

Cities and state governments are leading the way in reducing carbon emissions, and the LPEA should contribute to shifting energy trends.
