Treasured public lands like Canyons of the Ancients National Monument are part of our country’s strong natural legacy. President Trump moved against that history by cutting two million acres of land from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.
The president’s action will ravage pristine places, put wildlife in danger and jeopardize scientific and archaeological history, including sacred Native American sites. Not only is this decision environmentally irresponsible, it defies public opinion.
Ninety-eight percent of the record-breaking 2.8 million public comments delivered to the Department of the Interior called on the federal government to maintain or expand protections for these two monuments and 25 others, including Canyons of the Ancients.
We must do all we can to protect all our national monuments and other public lands.
